Native Abundance
Coexisting in Our Own Front Yards
The Vision: Looking Through the Lens of Another Species
For generations, we have been trained to view our yards purely through a human lens, demanding flat, manicured lawns that act as ecological deserts and are usually only landscaped with non-native plants.
But what happens when we change our perspective?
What happens when we look at our yards through the lens of a pollinator or a bird? When we care to give back to the local native ecosystem and landscape for life? Through my restoration work, Native Abundance, I partner with homeowners to bring that perspective to life.
The Work in Action
Over the last couple of years I have been blessed to work with homeowners who are inspired to heal the land they live on.
This work consists of:
- Ecological Education: Teaching homeowners about their local native ecosystem and giving them the knowledge they need to steward their land with care and respect.
- Habitat Creation: Doing the work to convert portions of lifeless lawns or landscapes back into thriving, biodiverse native plant habitats that provide for the local ecosystem and wildlife.
- Invasive Species Removal: Working to remove invasive species that outcompete native vegetation in an attempt to restore balance and diversity back to the true existing native ecosystem.

Boring, Lifeless, lawn.

Suburbia
Homeowner was inspired to remove part of their lawn and wanted me to plant a diverse native habitat. I also added a pathway so they can intimately connect with this space.

Year One: This place is slowly coming together and only getting better as the years go on. It doesn't take the biggest space to provide.

No better feeling than having a diverse group of native plants ready to heal the land.

This space used to be a lifeless lawn. Now, witnessing the return of swamp milkweed, queen of the prairie, spotted joe-pye weed, culver's root, and many other native species is truly an incredible feeling.

Medicine for the Land and the Human Spirit
It's been amazing to watch homeowners become inspired about their local ecosystems. To see them open their hearts for the birds and the pollinators and all the wildlife. It's been inspiring to see them really care to provide a habitat for them where they live.
I believe living in lifeless landscapes drains the human spirit, but when we are able to walk outside and feel the essence of the living world right in our front yard, something shifts within us. This connection is medicine to us, but also for this earth.
When we care deeply for the land, we are deeply caring for ourselves, too. It becomes a journey that helps us to remember our true nature.
